Grade Level: 7
Subject: Mathematics
Art Integrated: Mandala Art
Topic/Chapter: Fractions
Sub-Topic/Concept: Operations on Fractions
Learning Outcomes: At the end of the activity, students will be able to-
• Apply the knowledge of radius, diameter to draw concentric circles of mandala.
• Recall and exhibit their understanding of symmetry, pattern and shapes through the design of their mandala.
• Demonstrate their understanding of fractions and operations on fractions.
• Design a clock using concepts of fractions and mandala art.
• Integrate and appreciate Art in Math.

Ideated by and Executed by: Math Curriculum Team Grade 7 and Math Faculty Grade 7 Students

Description: Mandalas are the geometric designs that are made through uniform divisions of circle.
The students were learning Mandala Art in their Visual Education. So, the two concepts (Mandala Art and Fractions) were integrated through the activity. The students came out with beautiful and creative designs of the clock using the Operations on Fractions.

Using compass and appropriate radius, the student draws 4 concentric circles.
The four divisions thus created are filled with symmetrical repeated patterns keeping in mind the available space.
The students also colours the design to enhance the beauty in a balanced way.
The design is pasted at the centre of a square cardboard.
The student creates representations of number 1 – 12 using operations on fractions.
The student uses each operation at least once.
The representation cards are pasted at the appropriate place to demonstrate a clock.
Hands of the clock are pasted at the centre of the clock.

Note: Some students were able to move beyond fractions and even used Squares and Square Roots of grade 8 with fractions to represent the number.

Variations possible: Similar activity can be planned for the students of grade 8 with the concept of Square and square roots/Rational numbers.

Geometrical Patterns through Dance

Maths is embedded in our day to day life. Maths and dance are related in many ways. In general we may not see anything common in them but if we look closely, similarities and connections reveal themselves. Let us observe some geometrical patterns in the different postures of dance presented by Advaita Nair Class 7 Student of G.D Goenka Public School, Vasant Kunj
