Pythagoras Theorem - from Artists

Name of the school: Billabong High International School, Noida

Name of the Activity: Square Root Spiral Art

Grade Level: IX

Subject: Mathematics

Art(s) Integrated: drawing and colouring

Topic/Chapter: Number Systems

Sub-Topic/Concept: Irrational Numbers

Learning Outcome(s): Learners were able to:

Understand the application of the Pythagoras Theorem to find the values of different square roots.

Use the spiral as the basis for an art piece.

Ideated by: Ms Rajeshwari Dutta

Executed by: Learners of Grade IX

Description: Learners were asked to draw a right-angled triangle of base and perpendicular of 1 unit to get the hypotenuse as √2 by the Pythagoras Theorem. By taking √2 as the base, the value of √3was found. Similarly, a square root spiral was formed by constructing √4, √5, √6, √7 and… so on using a ruler, compass and protractor. Then the spiral was used as the basis for an art piece.

Variations possible: The activity can also be performed by paper folding.
